2007 Dodge Ram MegaCab 2500 Laramie 4x4 Road Test

2007 Dodge Ram MegaCab 2500 Laramie 4x4 Road Test
by Justin Pritchard / Auto123.com
Dodge's Ram 2500 Mega Cab Laramie 4x4 is the meanest road going truck on this side of a transport.

There's nothing more masculine. Not Steven Segal, not Chuck Norris's beard, and not even having nachos and beer for breakfast.

When Mega-Big is big enough, the Ram Mega Cab is the perfect vehicle for you.

The Mega Cab has a gargantuan back seat and huge doors that allow access to a cabin which you could play volleyball inside of. There's plenty of room in every direction, and it's less like being in a vehicle and more like being in a Cummins-powered living room.

The interior is trimmed with leather and wood-grain trim and features such options as a navigation system, sunroof, Infiniti stereo and DVD entertainment. The family Caravan from a decade back had some of the same switches and controls, and both Ford and GM's comparable interiors look more modern and cutting edge.

But they don't have a Jake-brake button. Press it, and the new 6.7 litre diesel engine uses an enhanced degree of engine braking to decelerate without wearing the pads and rotors out. It makes wonderful sound effects too.

The new powerplant is remarkable. It's quiet idling around town and only slightly noisier when pushed. Shut-down in drive-thru is not required, and there's no smoke or soot either. In fact, it's as clean burning as a gas engine. But unlike a gas engine, it's got a whopping 610 lb.-ft of torque, enabling Ram to tow anything you could fit into a trailer.

The interior is surprisingly comfortable and refined.

Most impressive? It's surprisingly comfortable and civilized on the highway, and road and tire noise aren't any worse than a small sedan.

For pure visual testosterone powered by a world leader in diesel engines, Dodge is it.

Total Price as Tested (incl. $1,300 destination): $68,705
